Medical Tourism – High Quality / Low Cost Procedures performed abroad Description of Medical Tourism Program for IAB Members Traveling abroad for care is growing at a rapid pace in the US. People are traveling to places as familiar as Mexico and Costa Rica for procedures as simple as a gall bladder removal to more complex, like a kidney transplant. Through a relationship with WorldMed Assist, IAB members have access to WorldMed Assist’s International network of high quality healthcare providers. These providers are able to perform high cost surgeries such as knee replacements, heart bypass, diskectomies, and kidney and liver transplants at a fraction of the cost of similar procedures in the US. IAB members with no health insurance, or with one of our limited benefits plans should seriously consider accessing this network if you are facing a high cost procedure. WorldMed Assist’s providers, most internationally accredited by the same organization that accredits US hospitals, are located in Mexico, Costa Rica, India, Belgium, Turkey and Korea. The surgeons they employ are board certified, and many were trained in the US or UK. Who will manage the process to access care abroad? WorldMed Assist is a Medical Tourism facilitator. In addition to managing a very select network of International providers, they provide patient-centric case management services for every step of the Medical Tourism event. During your investigation, and throughout your Medical Tourism event, a WorldMed Assist case manager (all registered nurses) will be your guide and assistant. Your case manager will help you transfer medical records to network physicians, arrange a conference with your chosen provider, help you secure visa and passport, arrange all transportation (including local transportation in the destination country), communicate with the provider while you are abroad, keep your US based support network informed, and follow-up for six months after you return to the US. Below is a snapshot of common Medical Travel procedures, the US costs and the savings you realize if you utilize your IAB Medical Travel benefit. Your WorldMed Assist case manager will provide all the costs before you travel abroad for care, including procedure, airfare, lodging, etc. The case manager will also assist you with flight arrangements, passports, visas, etc.
